PROGRESSIVE Lenses Q & A

Presbyopia is the normal loss of near focusing ability of the eye that arises when you age. Majority of the population starts to observe the effects of Presbyopia after the age of 40, when they feel difficulty in reading small print clearly (newspaper, WhatsApp messages in smart phones etc)

This happens when your eye’s natural lens thickens and stiffens due to age, reducing our inability to focus closer items.

According to latest studies nearly 2 billion people worldwide have Presbyopia. Presbyopia, unless corrected reduces people’s productivity and quality of life.

Treatment of Presbyopia

Usually Presbyopia can be treated with different types of eyeglasses (Progressive lenses, bi-focal lenses and reading glasses) and contact lenses.

Though bi-focal lenses, reading glasses and contact lenses are used, in this blog we are discussing  the treatment for Presbyopia using progressive lenses only..

What is a progressive lens?

Progressive lenses helps you to see clearly at all distances without a demarcation and look exactly the same as single vision lenses. Earlier people were using bi focal lenses (where the lens has two zones with two powers for seeing far and near )  for the treatment of presbyopia, but the new lifestyle (where an intermediately zone is also needed in addition to far and near (eg. people who uses laptops, computers, etc where intermediately zone is vital), better aesthetics and affordability made people to adopt progressive lenses extensively.

Common customer questions we have come across and our answers

Q) What is adaptation time when it comes to progressive lens?

A) Its the time taken for your eyes to adjust to the new lens completely. A normal eye takes an average of a week’s time to adapt perfectly, but there are latest technology lenses where adaptation period is much shorter.

Q) I have heard from multiple people that they are not comfortable with progressive lenses, so I am not sure whether I should go for it.

A) There are three main aspects to be considered:

  • Taking progressive measurements needs more expertise than taking a single vision lens measurement, so always approach a retailer who focuses on clinical aspects. Also the optician needs to be a lens expert who can understand your life style and dispense the ideal progressive lens for you as there are multiple choices when it comes to progressive lenses.

  • Unlike single vision lenses, high quality progressive lenses are the end product of multi-year international research which is protected by patents and not many companies have access to this technology.

  • Low quality progressive lens have very long adaptation time which can make people uncomfortable.

If you buy progressive lenses of reputed manufacturers through quality opticians you will be comfortable.

Q) Can I get a progressive lens with blue light protection?

A) Yes, there are progressive lenses available with blue light protection

Q) Is the progressive lens very expensive?
